Situated in the Piedmont at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville,
Spartanburg, Anderson, Easley, and Seneca are central to what is called the Upstate
of South Carolina. With South Carolina's long history being one of the original
13 colonies, the county line between Greenville and Spartanburg counties was originally
the demarcation line to the Indian Territory. In 1777 what is now Greenville
County was ceded by the Indians to South Carolina. Brave pioneers began to venture
forth and found the falls at the Reedy River an ideal place to settle. Eventually
these waters provided power for the burgeoning textile industry that became the
economic mainstay of the Upstate through the mid-20th century.
Forward looking leaders in these cities had the foresight in the mid-50's to
seek out other industries making the Upstate a center for international corporations
such as Michelin, BMW and the like. Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Easley
and Seneca are vibrant communites filled with southern hospitality and cosmopolitan
cultural activities.
